Our view: Hisses and cheers

CHEERS to the Mitchell Athletic Booster Club for changing up its membership benefits system.

Rather than having access only to a set number of events spread throughout the school year, the club will now offer punch cards for members, allowing them to attend events of their choice, up to a set number determined by the amount each member donated to the club.

We hope to see significant moral support for the Kernels increase throughout the upcoming school year.

HISSES to Corn Palace visitor numbers, which are down from previous years, thanks to construction around Mitchell.

This year, 13,000 fewer people visited the Corn Palace from May 1 to July 9 than did in the same period last year.

The numbers from July 4 onward, however, are higher this year than last year, and hopefully this, coupled with the upcoming completion of construction projects, will lead to a turnaround in Mitchell's annual tourism numbers.

CHEERS to Crystal Freund and Dale Quasney, the organizers of the Pickin' and Grinnin' Indoor Rummage Sale and Flea Market.

The event, held at the Davison County Fairgrounds on July 7, was a great way for people interested in buying or selling used items to have one-stop shopping, something not achieved by a single yard sale.

HISSES to Lake Mitchell, which now has chlorophyll levels dramatically higher than at this time last year.

The lake was placed at warning level recently, meaning people are now strongly encouraged not to make contact with lake water.

We do, however, commend the Lake Mitchell Advisory Committee for continuing to take steps toward understanding how best to get Lake Mitchell's algae problem under control.

CHEERS to Marius Laursen for being promoted to Mitchell's assistant fire chief.

Laursen's new title was officially announced during the first week of July. Sunday was his first day on the job.

Starting as a paramedic and firefighter and most recently serving as the fire marshal for the past eight years, Laursen is taking over for the recently retired Paul Morris.

We congratulate Laursen on his new role and wish him luck in keeping Mitchell safe.
