OUR VIEW: Hisses and cheers
CHEERS to the slate of candidate announcements unveiled this week for 2018's Mitchell City Council races.
Incumbent Councilmen Marty Barington, Kevin McCardle and Jeff Smith all announced their intentions to seek re-election, and 2017 candidate Clay Loneman also announced his candidacy.
A lot of big projects are on the horizon for the city of Mitchell, particularly the restoration of Lake Mitchell. The idea of three incumbents remaining on the board, two of which have served since 2006, gives us hope that the Lake Mitchell situation will be handled professionally and responsibly.
By no means are we counting out any competitors to the incumbents, but Barington made a fantastic point when he said, "I'll be honest with you, if somebody else gets thrown into the mix in the bottom of the ninth like it is now, their head will be spinning and they won't know where to go."
HISSES to the fire that left extensive damage to a home near Lake Mitchell last week.
No one was injured, and we should all be grateful for that, but it's always a terrible feeling when we hear over the scanner that there are visible flames at a home.
The good news is there were no casualties, and the Mitchell Fire Department did a fantastic job in handling the situation.
Last week's incident was also a good reminder that Mitchell has been lucky enough to avoid major fires in recent years. We don't know if that's due to the work of some local officials who have spent time checking that area homes have working smoke detectors, but we have to believe it helps.
CHEERS to Dakota Wesleyan University's basketball teams, who were both announced as participants in 2018's NAIA Division II national basketball tournaments.
The men will match up with Governors State University at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, and the women will square off with Indiana University East at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
With both tournaments in close proximity to Mitchell — the women in Sioux City and the men in Sioux Falls — we hope and expect to see DWU well represented in the stands.
Good luck to both teams, may we wish your tournament experience this year is a long and successful one.
