Steven Harmes

Steven Harmes, age 76, of Mitchell, SD died Friday, June 25, 2021 at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his devoted wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at the Congregational UCC Church in Mitchell, SD with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, June 29, 2021at the Will Funeral Chapel with a Eastern Star Service, Masonic Service, Prayer service and a time of sharing beginning at 7:00 PM Tuesday.

Steve was born Stephen Allen on October 2, 1944 at the Lutheran Hospital, Hot Springs, Fall River, S.D. to Allen and Adeline (Woods) Harmes. Steve has lived in Mitchell since 1945.  Steve graduated from Mitchell High School in 1962.  Steve was co-chair of his class reunions and making sure his classmates stayed in touch. He was looking forward to this year’s class reunion in August and being able to joke with all his old friends.

Steve met Eileen Faye Ottosen in 1962. The couple were united in marriage on October 15, 1965 in Farmer, SD.   To this union, they were blessed with their 2 children, Dawn and Scott.

Steve and Eileen moved to Wahpeton, ND where Steve graduated from the State School of Science on May 26, 1967.  While in Wahpeton their daughter Dawn Reine Harmes was born.  Scott Andrew Harmes was born in Mitchell SD in 1969.

He worked with his father, Allen Harmes at Palace Transvideo Cable TV installing cable TV, he was employed at Martiinck Brothers Oil Co., Miller Brother’s Oil Co. Truck Haven. Steve then began his career in 1971 as a salesman of office equipment first for Arden Brower and then with Business Products, Inc.  His route was from Mitchell, SD to Murdo, SD. He retired in 2014 after 40 years.

Steve was a smooth roller-skater.  He enjoyed music and loved to dance with his sweetheart.  Steve truly enjoyed life and always had a playful humor.  He was a people person, “sometimes” remembering names and always remembered faces. Steve always seemed to know people wherever he went.  You could find him working with the novelties (playing with the toys) at the Shrine Circus, and having way too much fun with it. 

Steve served in many positions of all organizations in which he belonged.  He was a former Scout Master of Boy Scouts Troop 71.  Past Master Councilor of DeMolay and Past Advisor of Dakota Chapter DeMolay.  He was raised as a 3rd degree Mason on November 28, 1965.  55 years of service with the Masonic Lodge, Past Master of Lodge AFAM, Order of the Eastern Star of Starlight Chapter, Order of The Eastern Chapter and Grand Worthy Patron of the Grand Chapter of South Dakota in 1989, Consistory in Yankton and El Raid Shrine in Sioux falls, twice the Exalted Ruler of the Elks, Mitchell Chapter 1059 and a member of the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen, Mitchell; his daughter Dawn (fiancé—Chris Parola) Greenway, Mitchell,  her children Justin (fiancé – Catianne Ngante) Denver CO with his children Madison and Emma; Jordan Long, Sioux Falls and Haley (fiancé – Dustin Lovre) Long, Sioux Falls; his son, Scott (Kristin Backstrom) Harmes, Richfield MN, their children Andrew, Caleb, Levi and Faith all of Richfield MN; a brother, Bill (Gayle) Harmes of Arlington, VA; a sister Andrea (Jack) Sindt of Mitchell, SD; sisters-in-law, Marlys (Jerry Small) Schirmer Mills, WA and Marcene Kessler, Aurora CO; several nephews and nieces and his nap furbuddy, Kemo. 

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Adeline Harmes in 1980 and Allen Harmes in 1991, his in-laws Marinus Frederick (1966) and Clara (Curl) (1991) Ottosen, his son-in-law, Robert Greenway in 2008.
