Rickey Norman Smith


Rickey Norman Smith, 74, of Plankinton, SD passed away Thursday, July 25, 2019 at his home. Funeral Services are 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 29, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Plankinton. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Wessington Springs, SD. Visitation will be held at the Church from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, July 28, 2019 with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service. Mount Funeral Home of Plankinton is assisting with arrangements. Rickey Norman Smith was born on October 5, 1944 to Norman and Joyce (Milhoan) Smith in Medford, Oregon. He graduated in 1963 from Crater High School in Central Point, OR and went on to attend George Fox College in Oregon. Rickey served his country in the United States Navy from January 26, 1965 – January 8, 1971 on the USS Enterprise. He then worked as a Quality Control Inspector in shipbuilding and nuclear power plants. On September 4, 1971, Rickey was united in marriage to Dianna Hinrichs at the Zion Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs, SD. He enjoyed a good game of cards, visiting with friends over coffee, getting some exercise while swimming and time spent with his family. He liked to try his luck during trips to the casino, enjoyed the outdoors while hunting and fishing, and his video games of choice were Tetris and Minesweeper. Rickey was a member of the United Methodist Church, Goeres-Woods American Legion Post #5 and Aurora County VFW Post #6554 in Plankinton. He also belonged to the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Disabled Veterans of America. Grateful for having shared in Rickey’s life: his wife of over 47 years, Dianna Smith of Plankinton, SD; four children: Trina (Lee) Johnson of Alexandria, SD, Renae (Gaylurd) Gerlach of Stickney, SD, Sheila (Travis) Grieve of Plankinton, SD and Shawn Smith of Mitchell, SD; 12 grandchildren: Casondra, Brianna and Ashton Gerlach, Trent, Hayden and Kaleb Johnson, Braden and Lucas Grieve, Andrew (Shawnda) Smith, Brittany Smith(Chris), Cynthia Heinis and Sarah Birmeier; five great grandchildren: Emmit Smith, Charlotte and Chandler Filter, Gavin and Dylan Smith; his mother, Joyce Smith of Central Point, OR; a sister, Teresa (Ray) DeLude of Central Point, OR; father-in-law, Merle Hinrichs of Wessington Springs, SD; four in-laws: Bryon (Brenda) Hinrichs of Wessington Springs, SD, Judy Lindhorst of Wecota, SD, Marcia (Darrel) Hohn of Beresford, SD and Laura Hinrichs (Greg) of Flandreau, SD; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Rickey was preceded in death by his father, Norman Smith; mother-in-law, Ada Hinrichs; a brother-in-law, Larry Lindhorst; and a grandson, Brandon Smith.
