Ida Marie Hoffman


Ida Marie Hoffman, 88, of Plankinton, SD passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, SD. Funeral Mass is 11:30 AM Friday, May 6, 2022 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton. A Committal Service will follow at Mizpah Catholic Cemetery, Plankinton. Visitation will be held at the church from 6:00 – 7:00 PM Thursday, May 5, 2022 with a 7:00 PM Wake Service. Mount Funeral Home of Plankinton is assisting with arrangements. Ida Marie (Atkinson) Hoffman was born on February 12, 1934 to Ross and Beulah (Hawkins) Atkinson in Mitchell, SD. In 1952 she graduated from Plankinton High School, upon receiving her teaching degree, and later in life her master’s, she taught in country schools and then at White Lake, Mount Vernon, Plankinton, and Mitchell Tech. On August 22, 1955 Ida was united in marriage to James “Red” Hoffman at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton.

Ida was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors, especially spending time with family at their cabin at Twin Lakes where she loved water skiing, teaching everyone how to water ski, boating, and fishing. She was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame for bowling and liked to travel. Ida especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Grateful for having shared in Ida’s life: her son, Jerry Hoffman of Plankinton, SD; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Hoffman of Mesa, AZ; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren: Tori (Travis) Grode – Isabelle and Owen; Joe (Crystal) Hoffman – Vanessa, Ethan, Dreyton and Amelia; Beth (Phil) Victor – Kenzie, Emersyn, Tony and Ross; Brandi (Marcus) Bermea – Jace, Griffin and Braelyn; David Hoffman; Josie Hoffman; three sisters: Pat Cox of Bella Vista, AR, Shirley Brink of Gettysburg, SD and Judy Brink of Cold Spring, MN; a brother-in-law, Robert (Kris) Hoffman of Watertown, SD; three sisters-in-law: Janet Vlasman of Madison, SD, Lenora Hoffman of Plankinton, SD and Betty Hoffman of Mitchell, SD; along with many nieces and nephews.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, James “Red” Hoffman (Dec. 26, 2020); her son, Jim Hoffman; a daughter-in-law, Gail Hoffman; her parents, Ross and Beulah Atkinson; parents-in-law, Martin and Caroline Hoffman; and seven brothers-in-law: Marion Brink, Ted Cox, Bob Brink, Ozzie Hoffman, Alvin Hoffman, Dale Hoffman and Duane Vlasman.
