Edwin Lutz, 96, of Garretson (formerly of Plankinton, SD) passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell, SD. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 AM Thursday, July 29, 2021 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton. Burial will be in Mizpah Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at Will Funeral Chapel.
Edwin was born on February 16, 1925 to Lawrence and Ruth (Jones) Lutz. He graduated from Plankinton High School in 1943.
On September 12, 1953 he married Barbara Wolf in Woonsocket, SD and to this union five children were born. Edwin worked for the city of Plankinton, SD for thirty-three years before retiring.
He enjoyed pheasant hunting, reading western books, and riding horses. Edwin’s biggest joy came from watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events and plays. He also liked attending auction sales.
Edwin was a blood donor throughout his life; giving blood to help others all the way into his 80’s. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a longtime member of the Plankinton Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief. Edwin was a hard worker and taught his family strong ethics and values. One of his children’s most memorable chores was to pick potato bugs off all the potato plants.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife; Barbara, children; Doug (Martha) Lutz, Sandra (Mark) Friedrichs, Marcia (Mike) Lachnit, Deb (Gary) Hanson), Trish (Paul) Bouwman, grandchildren; Lydia, Jessi, Molly, Tyler, Dan, Darin, Shawn, Josh, Jake, Katie, Haley, Cody, Megan, Justin, Jami, Drew, and 28 great grandchildren.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; Melvin, Robert, Tom and one sister, Esther.
