Irene Hasz

Irene Hasz, 99, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. A public graveside service will be 2:00 PM Friday, January 15, at Parkston Protestant Cemetery. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Irene Alma Hasz was born November 8, 1921 on the family farm near Clayton, SD, to Philip and Bertha (Kost) Schoppert. She attended grade school in the Wolf Creek area and was the second of four girls in the family.

On February 16, 1941, she married Arnet Hasz, and they moved to a farm northwest of Mitchell where they spent the next 45 years. They were members of the Loomis Congregational Church for over 75 years, teaching Sunday school and working with the youth. She spent many hours working in the fields and tending the livestock and always had a very productive garden.

In 1986, they moved to Mitchell, and she joined the Sweet Adelines and was a member for nearly 20 years.

While on the farm, she was instrumental in helping guide the growth of her 3 granddaughters. Instilling in them an old-fashioned work ethic and was always very proud of their accomplishments.

She spent the last 2 1/2 years at Countryside Living where she made several new friends. She passed away after being at Firesteel Nursing home for 2 weeks.

She is survived by one son, Larry (Carol) of Mitchell; three granddaughters: Denise (Steve) Hoffman of Mitchell; Michele Hasz of Columbus, OH; and Amanda (Jon) Thomas of Tempe, AZ; and four great-grandchildren, Lily & Emma Hoffman, Zoey Feninger, and River Thomas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three sisters, Ruth Boddicker, Leona Preheim, and Ellestine Letcher.
