Norma J. Harris

Norma J Harris, 84, went home to be with the Lord July 2, 2019, after living a life filled with the love of family and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm on July 8, 2019 at Bittner Funeral Chapel with the burial (interment) at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell, SD. Visitation will begin one hour before the Celebration of Life Service with the family present to greet friends from 12:30-1:30 pm. Norma was born on November 22, 1934 to John V. Rothones and Mable (Cole) Rothones in Mitchell, SD. She was raised in Mitchell and attended the Mitchell Public Schools. During her high school years and afterwards she continued to work beside her father at his restaurant, the Legion Lunch. Later, she moved to Tacoma, WA. On February 12, 1955, she married Ellsworth James (Pete) Harris in Tacoma, WA. They lived in California, Hawaii and Missouri. In 1968, she moved back to her hometown, Mitchell, SD to be a caretaker for her parents. She worked numerous years sitting for children, working at Red Owl, Mitchell Retirement Home, Firesteel Healthcare Center and the Daily Republic. She will always be remembered for her generous and caring personality. Her life centered on her family and the many friends she treasured. Each day she enjoyed greeting those she met with a loving smile and delightful visits. She participated in dance during earlier years and entertained her fondness of music as years passed. She was active as a RSVP volunteer and later was a volunteer at her place of residence. Her ultimate pastime was playing cards and bingo with friends. Grateful for having shared her life are her three daughters: Sherry Pierson and husband Wes Pierson, Salem, SD, Cathy Barringer and husband Steven Barringer, Sioux Falls, SD and Diana Martin, Sioux Falls, SD, Karla Harris, Daughter-in-law, Ames, IA., eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, one sister, Carol Gabiger, Poughkeepsie, NY., one brother, John Rothones and wife Donna, Loveland, CO, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mabel Rothones, her sister Geraldine Zaugg, son, Marvin Harris and son-in-law Barry Martin and brother-in-law Harry Gabiger.
