Leona Mae Stehly, age 95, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, SD. Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the Congregational UCC Church in Mitchell, SD. A private family service will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the Congregational UCC Church, with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Because of Covid concerns, masks are recommended. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Will Funeral Chapel.
Leona Mae Stehly, daughter of Carl and Sadie (Heidner) Strand, was born April 22, 1926 in Mitchell, SD. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1944 and earned her Elementary School Certificate from Wessington Springs College. Leona taught school in the Loomis area and at Badger 44.
Leona was united in marriage with Donald Stehly on August 17, 1947 at the Congregational UCC Church in Mitchell, SD. The couple farmed in the Mitchell area.
Leona was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Davison County Extension Club called the wonder workers for 60 years and held every office at least once.
She worked the polls and booths for the Davison County Democrats. Leona enjoyed playing the piano by ear. She was an excellent cook and cooked for family and farm employees until she was 80 years old. Leona also loved to play bridge and other card games.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 74 years, Donald Stehly; her children, Donald Gene Stehly and his wife Denise, Paul Craig Stehly and his wife, Jane, Donna Lee Zoss and her husband, John; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, Jimmy; a grandson, Michael; her parents; a brother, Duane Strand; and a sister, Margaret Shonley.
