Leland Dean “Ole” Olson, 87, of Mitchell passed peacefully with his daughters by side on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at his home. A memorial service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Interment will be at the columbarium at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery with full Military Rites.

Leland was born on January 1, 1934 in Forestburg, SD to Robert and Vera (Howe) Olson. He attended school in Artesian, SD. Leland later joined the Army and became a paratrooper for the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles”, jumping a total of 18 times. He played football for the Army as well. Leland enjoyed working almost as much he enjoyed helping people and his career choices reflected that; he was a paramedic, firefighter, carpenter, business owner and a police officer.

Leland married his best friend and soul mate, Elizabeth McKee on November 25, 1962 and the two were inseparable until her death on May 23, 2021. Leland lived in South Dakota until the age of 40 when he moved to Colorado; returning to South Dakota in 2005.

Leland enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing and camping. He and Elizabeth also loved to dance. Leland’s greatest pleasures in life were making people laugh, spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. He took care of his family; even up until the day he passed away, constantly trying to take care of his daughters.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Sondra Waltenbaugh, Sheri (Jeff) Fowler, grandchildren Kaila (Tyler) Ashley, Jakeob Olson, Alexander (Megan) Waltenbaugh, Katrina (Samuel) Crabtree, Kyle Waltenbaugh, Zachariah Olson, great grandchildren, Jason Ashley, Aubriana Crabtree and Lumin Waltenbaugh.

Leland was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a son, Steven, and two brothers, Robert and James Olson.

In lieu of flowers please direct memorials to either the Wesleyan Church or the Disabled American Veteran’s Association in his name.
