Karen Jean Bauer, daughter of Carl and Lula (Johnson) Bauer, was born July 27, 1944 in Spencer, SD. She was the 11th of 15 siblings and the last one to be born at home. She attended school in her hometown of Spencer and when the family moved to Mitchell, she attended Notre Dame School.

On December 21, 1960, she married Milo Hansen. They made their home in Mitchell and had lived in the same house for the past 57 years. Over the years, they welcomed and raised four children with Karen devoting herself to home and family. She also worked in the community at The Methodist Hospital, Sunshine Food Store, Brady Nursing Home, and Home Health Care.

Karen and Milo enjoyed traveling around the Midwest, supported the Legion with Saturday night suppers, and enjoyed playing card games with family. Karen especially loved spending time with her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent countless hours cooking, playing house, playing school, and anything else to make them feel loved and special.

Karen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for 60 years and her faith was extremely important to her. She was the most kind-hearted person that made everyone feel welcome and loved.
