Joan “Joani” Goldammer

Joan “Joani” Goldammer, 84, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Friday, December 31, 2021, one day before her 85th birthday, at her home in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, January 7, 2022, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Thursday, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service.

Joan Darlene (DeJong) Goldammer (pronounced Joann) was born to Ralph and Grace (Wynia) DeJong on January 1st, 1937, in Bay City, OR. The family moved back to SD in 1938 to a farm in Academy. She was the only daughter of 5 children. She attended Lake George County School, and graduated from Platte High School. She earned her Registered Nursing degree from Presentation School of Nursing in Mitchell. She worked at St. Joseph, Methodist, and Queen of Peace Hospitals, (many of those years in the ICU) and Delaney Clinic, retiring in 2013.

On November 10th, 1957, she was united in marriage to Wayne Goldammer at First Lutheran Church, where they remained members. To this union, 2 children were born.

The family enjoyed many camping trips and time on Lake Mitchell water skiing. Wayne and Joani enjoyed camping and had a membership to Hart Ranch in Rapid City. Their longest adventure took them and their RV to Alaska.

Joani enjoyed camping, going to rummage sales, the occasional trip to the Casinos, watching baseball, football, and basketball. She attended many DWU basketball games. She also enjoyed going to car races.

She was very proud of her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She helped celebrate the baptism of the youngest the Sunday before her passing. She attended many dance recitals and hockey games, sometimes traveling quite far. They always enjoyed a road trip.

Joani is survived by her two children: Debra (Steve) Rice of Mitchell; Mark (Renee) Goldammer of Huron, SD; five grandchildren: Jason (Molly) Goldammer and Chantel (Ryan) Halperin all of Huron; Mollie (Alex) Loes of Mitchell; Anna Rice of Layton, UT; and Jacob (ReeAnn) Rice of Glendale, AZ; five great-grandchildren: Cashton Goldammer, Axton and Skylar Halperin all of Huron; Thea and Henry Loes of Mitchell; two brothers: Don (Dee) DeJong of Craig, CO, and Lawrence (special friend Jane Weineke) DeJong of Yankton, SD; four brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne in 2020; parents; parents-in-law; two brothers: Harold & Jerroll DeJong both of Alaska; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
