Herbert L. Mischke


Herbert “Herb” L. Mischke age 86 of Hazel, SD, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2019, at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD, with his daughters by his side. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Paul Janke will officiate. Music will be provided by Carol Janke as organist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Wednesday by 10:30 am for a prayer service.

Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Tuesday, from 4-7 pm with a Time of Sharing and Songs at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.

Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Herb’s granddaughters: Tacey Dykstra, Chelsey Albrecht, Darcey Long, Ashley Knigge and Carly Beckmann; also: Don Seim, Ken Struckman, Kale Struckman, Roger Fritz, Tracy Fritz, Wayne Knutson, Wayne Carney, Richard “Paddy” McNamara and Rodney Tarum. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons: Trevor Mischke, Brett Mischke, Rustin Deibert, and Cody Beckmann; Trevor Stieg, Shane Struckman, Curt Pullman and Keith Pullman.

Herb was born June 29, 1933, at Watertown, SD, to Ernest and Lillian (Barr) Mischke. He was Baptized and Confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grover, SD. He attended Oxford Country School #7 and graduated from Thomas High School in 1951. He participated in basketball, baseball and track while in high school.

On September 23, 1951, Herb married Merlyn Rae Tarum at New Hope Lutheran Church in rural Hayti, SD. The couple made their home on the family farm where they raised their 3 children: Gary, Connie and Barbara. Herb was a proud farmer for 68 years. Herb and Merlyn had the Pioneer Seed Corn dealership for 37 years.

Herb and Merlyn enjoyed following their children and grandchildren through their high school and college careers. They spent many winters wintering in Mesa, AZ, where Herb played golf 2-3 times a week. He and Merlyn made many special lifelong friends over the years. Herb served on the Emmanuel Lutheran Church board as president for 30 years, was the Brantford Township Commissioner for 40 years and was on the Farm Credit Board for 15 years. He was an active bowler in Watertown and Hayti and also enjoyed the Game Show Network, Wheel of Fortune and Western Movies. Herb was known for growing his beautiful red geraniums and gathering together with the Hazel Cafe crew. He was notorious for driving a black vehicle with gold pinstripes.

Merlyn passed away June 19, 2002, and Herb continued to make his home on the family farm. He married JoAnn (Tetzlaff) Lee on July 12, 2003, in Piedmont, SD. Herb and JoAnn enjoyed traveling, time spent with family and spending their winters together in AZ.

Herb is survived by his wife JoAnn, Watertown, SD; his 2 daughters: Connie (RaVonne) Deibert, Aberdeen, SD; and their children: Chelsey (Chris) Albrecht, children; Camryn, Conner and Carson; Rustin (Raquel) Deibert, children; Anistyn and Aniya; daughter, Barbara (Doug) Beckmann, White Lake, SD; and their children: Tacey (Matt) Dykstra, child, Ryann; Darcey (Dustin) Long, children; Wren, Wynn and Wells; Ashley (Nick) Knigge, children; Landon, Taydon, Benton, and Zaxton; Cody Beckmann (Grace Garrels) and Carly Beckmann, one daughter in law, Joyce (Tim) Carston, and her and Gary’s children, Trevor (Erika) Mischke, children; Braxton, Chloe and Kinsley; Brett Mischke and children; Katelyn, Konnor and Kason. Herb is also survived by one brother, Vernon (Betty) Mischke, Champlin, MN; two sisters; Janice (Wendell) Pullman, Watertown, SD, Maureen Viereck, Sioux Falls, SD; one sister-in-law, DeLaine (Marvin) Hannemann, Ramona, SD; special nieces and nephews and cousins; and JoAnn’s extended family.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Merlyn, one son, Gary, his parents, one infant brother, Dale, one brother-in-law, Robert Viereck and his in-laws, Sam and Clara (Hanson) Tarum and brother-in-law, Dayton Tarum.
