Eugene Charles “Gene” Altman, 93, of Kimball, SD passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD. Funeral Mass is 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. A Committal Service at Mizpah Catholic Cemetery in Plankinton, SD will follow. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 – 10:30 A.M. Wednesday with a 10:15 A.M. Rosary. Mount Funeral Home of Kimball is assisting with arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family through mountfuneralhome.com. The Service will be live-streamed on “Mount Funeral Homes” Facebook page and also under “Photos and Videos” in Gene’s record on the funeral home website.

Eugene Charles Altman was born on July 27, 1927 to Mike and Frances (Carber) Altman on the family farm in Aurora County, SD. He attended country school and one year at the Catholic School in White Lake, SD. He helped in family farming, he worked for Walt Dunn at the Standard Oil Station and later for Fitzgerald John Deere Implement as a Mechanic.

On August 4, 1947 Gene was united in marriage to Bernice Helen Powers at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball, SD. To this union five children were born: Dwayne, John Anthony, Diane, Dennis and Doug. They made their home in Plankinton, SD and in 1949 they moved to a farm southeast of town until relocating to their farm northwest of Kimball in 1953. There they farmed and operated a gravel and water hauling business. Then in 1977, they moved from the farm into Kimball and Gene worked for Friendly Gas of Platte, SD delivering propane in the Kimball area, later also for Cenex in White Lake until retirement in 1995.

Gene was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church of Kimball and the Knights of Columbus.

Grateful for having shared in Gene’s life, son: Doug Altman of Mitchell, SD; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Altman of Kimball, SD; 14 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Ann Cosand of White Lake, SD; along with many nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by: his wife of 69 years, Bernice Altman (Nov. 19, 2016); three sons: John Anthony (in infancy), Dennis and Dwayne Altman; a daughter, Diane Bussey and husband, Danny; an infant granddaughter; an infant great granddaughter; his parents, Mike and Frances Altman; a brother-in-law, Charles Cosand; and several in-laws.
