Donald R. Eichacker

Donald R. Eichacker passed into eternal life at the age of 85 at the Avantara Nursing Home in Salem on October 28, 2021. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 am on Monday, November 1, 2021 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Salem SD. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Sunday, October 31 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem with Scripture Service at 7 pm.

Don Eichacker was born on January 4, 1936 in Bridgewater, SD to Joe and Anna (Paweltzki) Eichacker. The Family moved to Salem where he graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Salem. Don was united in marriage to Elaine Gstohl on April 6, 1959, in Salem SD.

During his lifetime, Don worked construction, building elevators in several towns until 1959 when he started his dairy farm north of Salem. In 1989, they moved into Salem but continued to farm. Don enjoyed the farm by fulfilling his dream of restoring many JD tractors, but managed to find time to camp, fish and travel, which included many bus trips. His primary hobby was fishing and was an active member of the McCook Wild Life Club. After his retirement, he never lost his love of the land and livestock. He was the rain gauge checker on the different quarters of land and also spent his spare time having coffee with local farmers and friends at the Short Stop and T & C’s. He also loved driving around the countryside checking on the farm work and if needed, run for repairs. Another joy in his life were his grandchildren and he loved to take them camping and fishing. Don was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Salem and served on the church council, President of St. Mary’s Cemetery Association and served his community by serving on the Salem Public School Board. He also was a director for Sioux Valley Milk Producers.

Having happily shared his life with his wife Elaine, and their marriage produced five sons; David (Jolene) of Salem, Kevin of Madison, Jerry (Jayne) of Salem, Keith (Dawn) of Sioux Falls, Curt of De Smet. Twelve grandchildren; Matt, Lauren, Ryan, Kelsey, Megan, Nicole, Joe, Allison, Jack, Trevor, Brittney & Taylor Eichacker. Siblings, JoAnn (Jim) Mentele, Midland MI & George (Carla) Eichacker, Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers; Lyle, Leonard, Chuck, Raphael & John.
