DeWayne J. Weiland

DeWayne J. Weiland, 90, of Mitchell, SD, died on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be on Monday, November 23, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements by Will Funeral Chapel.
DeWayne J. Weiland was born February 21, 1930 in Vivian, SD to Anthony B. and Anna M. (Hajek) Weiland. He grew up and attended school at Vivian.
DeWayne began working at a young age in the family business, the Milwaukee Railroad. In 1944, he moved with his family to Mitchell.
At the age of 16, he was active military, serving in the 1st Company Parachute, 187th Airborne Regiment, 101st Airborne Division; and the Glider Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne and 82nd Airborne Divisions. He was a Staff Sergeant, Qualified Jumpmaster and World War II and Korean War veteran.
After military service, he returned to the railroad, meeting and marrying Margaret Larson. At the time of his retirement in 1982, he was a locomotive engineer.
Following retirement, he enjoyed golfing, hunting, and coffee with friends. He enjoyed time spent with family of all generations and was unconditional is his love and care for all.
DeWayne is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Mitchell; three daughters: Diana Weiland, of Mitchell, Connie Weiland (Kenneth Jones), of Laramie, WY, and Lisa Riggs (Roger), of Ethan; grandchildren: AJ Sperlich (Lyn, son Rap), of Mitchell, Dana Rasmusson (Kyle, children Christian, Malia, Amara) of Mitchell, and Matthew Jones, of Prague, Czech Republic; special niece, Donna Weiland, Mitchell; sister -in-law, Addie Weiland, Sequim, WA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, and their spouses.
To all who knew DeWayne, he was a true patriot.
