Darlene Peta

Darlene E. Peta, 87, of Ottumwa, IA died at 8 a.m. August 14, 2019 at Vista Woods Care Center. She was born October 10, 1931 in White Lake, SD to William and Hildegarde Kirsch Ries. Darlene married William J. Peta on February 12, 1955 at St. Willibrods Catholic Church in Robey, SD and he preceded her in death on August 31, 2010. She was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation and had been a member of the choir. Darlene was involved in her community including various committees, City Council, League of Women Voters, Noon Lions among others, and was awarded the prestigious Gene Schultz Community Service Award. Darlene is survived by her children, Suzanne (Kevin) Garaghty of Maple Grove, MN, Mary Sigman (Dennis Zellers) of Ottumwa, William (Beth) Peta of Chanhassen, MN, David Peta (Rhonda Conklin) of Gillette, WY, James (Linda) Peta of Mitchell, SD and Thomas (Pamela) Peta of Mesa, AZ; 11 grandchildren, Patrick Garaghty of Maple Grove, MN, Samantha (Nick) Ulin of Agency, IA, Kristin (James) Freeman of Des Moines, IA Zach Peta and Gabrielle Peta of Chanhassen, MN, Vincent Peta and Victoria Peta of Brookings, SD, Seth Peta and Eric Peta of Mesa, AZ, Zach Adkison of Denver, CO and Keith Adkison of Cheyenne, WY; 8 great-grandchildren, Payton, Chase and Noah Ulin, Alex, Piper, Brylan, Arylan and Kaylan Adkison; a sister, Carol Backes of Platte, SD; 3 brothers, Kenneth Ries of Corsica, SD, Eugene Ries of White Lake, SD and Gerald Ries of Hudson, WI. She was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Jane Peta and Marjorie Peta and a grandson, Max Andrew Sigman. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father James Betzen C.PP.S. presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. The family will greet friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday followed by a Christian Wake at 5 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501.
