Barbara Dawn (Martin) Herrick lost her nearly 7-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease when she passed away on August 18, 2021 at  Bethesda Home in Webster.

Funeral services were Monday, August 30, 2021 at American Lutheran Church in Webster, SD.

Barb, who was the first baby born in Day County on New Year’s Day in 1935, returned to Webster in late April of this year, to spend her last months in the community where she and her late husband Don grew up and always considered “home”. She had lived in two different assisted living facilities in Sioux Falls during the past 4 years.

Barb and Don, and children Deborah Merkwan and Nick Herrick were long-time residents of Mitchell, where Don served as a SD Highway Patrolman and later as Davison County Emergency Management Director and Barb was a secretary at First Lutheran Church for 26 years.  Don passed away in 1995, just days after his 60th birthday.

Barb was a loving and caring wife and mother and a doting “Nana” to her two youngest grandsons, Taylor and Alex Herrick, who both now work as home health professionals in Denver, CO.  The name “Nana” stuck, as all of Taylor’s and Alex’s friends referred to her as “Nana”.  Barb became an avid hockey and wrestling fan, as she traveled with son Nick and daughter-in-law Vicky, to countless out-of-town games and matches in which the boys competed.

Barb also enjoyed shopping – and she and daughter Deb often hit the road on shopping sprees near and far – always looking for that special bargain.  One of Barb’s shopping tips was, “A girl can never have enough shoes.”

The Herrick family loved spending time at the lake, where they often hosted family gatherings, especially on the 4th of July.  They lived in a home on Lake Mitchell for one year and they later spent a great deal of time during summers at three different cabins they owned on Pickerel Lake, “back home” near Webster.

Barb and Don were high school sweethearts, who were married after Barb completed her freshman year of college at SDSU in Brookings.

Barb is survived by daughter Deborah (Mike) Merkwan of Yankton and Waubay Lake, son Nick (Vicky) Herrick of Mitchell and Pickerel Lake; grandsons Taylor and Alex of Denver, CO, and Chris (Terra) Sueflow of Sioux Falls; brother David of Sioux Falls; sister Julie (Les) Kinstad, Sioux Falls; sister-in-law, Letha (Tom (Huffman) of Casa Grande, AZ, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don, sister Delores Pries, brother Frank Martin, parents, Nick and Maym Martin and in-laws, Andrew and Hilda Herrick.

The family requests memorials be made to the American Lutheran Church in Webster, SD.
