Jessie Mae (Moreland) Garton, 93, of Mitchell South Dakota died February 7, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at Avera Queen of Peace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Monday February 12, 2018 at The First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at the Serviceman's Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4-6 PM Sunday February 11, 2018 at the church. Jessie Mae Sarah Moreland - daughter of James L. and Edith Anne (Cahoon) Moreland, was born Sept 20, 1924 in Mitchell, SD. She grew up in Mitchell attending Litchfield Elementary School, Mitchell Junior High School, and Mitchell High School, graduating in 1942. After graduation she moved to Vancouver, WA to live with her best friend, Leona Plooster and her family. She worked for a Credit Bureau in Vancouver for a short time before moving to Hayward, CA to live with her sister Margaret. Jessie's first job in Hayward was in the office of Hunts Cannery. She then worked at McNeil Construction Company from 1942-1943. They were in the process of building the new SeaBee Camp at Livermore, CA. In 1944 she returned to South Dakota and worked at Armours Inc., candling eggs and for the government at the Mitchell Air Base north of Lake Mitchell.

Jessie attended Dakota Wesleyan University from 1946-1948 for music. During that time she worked for K&K Company and Wick Jewelry as a clerk. After Wesleyan, Jessie worked at National Life Insurance Company as a receptionist. She met David Garton Sr. in Aberdeen, SD in January 1947 through friends, Juanita and John Smith. She was united in marriage to David Garton Sr. on December 31, 1950 in Mitchell, SD at the First Presbyterian Church. David Sr. was serving in the US Air Force and the family lived at various air force bases where he was stationed. Locations included Great Falls, MT; Waco, TX; North Platte, NE; Biloxi, MS and Topeka KS. The family returned to Mitchell 1964.

In 1970, Jessie began her career at the Mitchell Junior High School as a library technician. She retired in 2004 after 34 years of service. Jessie was a lifetime member of The First Presbyterian Church of Mitchell. She was active in the church choir, taught Sunday school and Bible school and was an Elder. She enjoyed singing in the Middle Border Chorus, Dakota Wesleyan Chorus, Sweet Adelines and Women's Barber Shop.

Jessie loved Musicals, Plays and Concerts; and was involved in the local Fine Arts Community. She especially enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren's extra-curricular activities.

Her greatest joy was her children, grand-children and great grand-children, who she visited with often. She was very happy living and raising her family in Mitchell.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: David Garton Jr (Debbie), Dennis Garton, Cheryl Garton (Tom Case), Caryn Garton (Fred Coury) of Mitchell; Ron Garton of Charlotte, NC and Corinne Weber (Mike Plambeck) of Bellevue, NE; her 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She is loved dearly by all and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband David; brothers James (Eddie) and Lawrence; sister Margaret and her grandson Christopher David Garton.
