Thursday’s doubleheader with Rapid City Post 320 was a mixed bag for the Mitchell Post 18 Junior Legion team.
Mitchell posted a dominant 5-0 win in Game 1, but Rapid City was able to return the favor with a 6-2 Game 2 win at Drake Field.
Post 18 collected 15 hits in Game 1 and pitcher Jonah Schmidt only allowed three, while striking out eight in a complete-game shutout win. Schmidt also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Tate DeBoer led the Mitchell offensive onslaught, going 4-for-4 at the dish, while also driving in a run. Colby Gillen contributed two hits and Joe VanOverschelde had two hits and an RBI.
The offensive production didn’t rollover to Game 2, as Mitchell recorded three of its five hits in the sixth and final frame, while also committing four errors in the contest.
Jace Grosdidier delivered a two-run double in the sixth to account for Post 18’s scoring in the game. Gillen also added two more hits in the game.
Rapid City took control with three runs on four hits and an error in the top of the sixth inning. Shooter pitcher Peyton Ness gave up five hits and four walks and fanned six as he tossed all six innings for the win.
Jake Helleloid took the loss for Post 18, giving up three runs on eight hits, while striking out four in five innings.
Mitchell (8-6) hosts Renner in a doubleheader today at 4 p.m. at Drake Field.
