Class B state tournament: Bon Homme/Scotland's denied shot for repeat by Lennox
SIOUX FALLS—One run.
That's all it took to end Bon Homme/Scotland's bid to repeat as the SDHSBA Class B state champions on Monday.
The Cavaliers squared off with Lennox in the state quarterfinals on Monday at Ronken Field, and after boasting eight batters with an average of .300 or better during the season, Bon Homme/Scotland was limited to one in a 1-0 season-ending loss.
Bon Homme/Scotland only surrendered three hits, but it also committed three errors and one resulted in the lone run of the game.
Brock Anderson doubled to left field for Lennox with two outs in the second inning, and on the next at-bat, Bon Homme/Scotland couldn't handle a JD Kirchner ground ball to shortstop. Anderson would round third and cross home plate for the game-winning run.
Anderson tossed all seven innings, surrendering one hit and one walk, while striking out 12 Cavaliers.
Christian Uecker took the loss for Bon Homme/Scotland, despite not giving up an earned run on three hits, three walks and eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
Bon Homme/Scotland ends the season 14-2.
Redfield Area 14, Winner/Colome 2
Three hits and an error put Winner/Colome in a 3-0 hole in the top of the first inning and it could never recover.
The Royals allowed 10 hits and committed four errors in a loss to Redfield Area in the Class B quarterfinals on Monday.
After trailing 6-0 through 1 1/2 innings, Shea Connot hit an RBI triple and Jacob Beckers hit an RBI single during the ensuing at-bat to help Winner/Colome trim the lead to 6-2, but that would be the extent of the offense for the game.
Wren Barrett led the Redfield Area attack by going 3-for-5 at the plate, while also driving in five runs. Redfield Area tacked on two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings, before adding four more in the seventh.
Jackson Kinzer gave up one earned run on six hits in four innings on the mound and struck out five for Winner/Colome.
The Royals end the season 10-4.
