Mitchell authorities have determined a cause of death related to the two people who died in a hotel room on Monday.

Mitchell Police Division Detective Lt. Don Everson said Wednesday that autopsies have been performed on the man and woman found dead at the Thunderbird Hotel on Monday. Police said the deaths were caused by asphyxiation.

“It appears that the two people had taken their own lives by hanging,” Everson said in a statement.

Mitchell Police said Tuesday that the deceased individuals took steps to avoid being identified, and authorities said they are still in the process of notifying family members in another state about the deaths.

The individuals arrived in Mitchell and checked into the hotel on Saturday. They traveled from another state in a U-Haul van, and authorities were able to rule out foul play. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation has also been involved in the case.
