LETTER: The differences for hemp and marijuana

(metro creative)

To the Editor:

I appreciate your covering the hemp/CBD issue in South Dakota. One correction to note is that cannabis is hemp. Both hemp and marijuana are both "cannabis." I would appreciate helping the public to learn this. Sweet corn is corn and field corn is corn. It's all corn. The same is true with hemp and marijuana.

We are watching in Minnesota in dismay as federally hemp is legal (including derivatives such as CBD). Most states are adding laws to fill in the gray area of CBD to allow it as "not a drug except for FDA approved drugs ... aka Epidolex."

CBD does not 100 percent equal Epidolex, thus CBD contained in a full plant hemp extract is a botanical, which happens to have a large portion of CBD in it. Like breastmilk, and we don't call that a drug either. What is puzzling is why South Dakota wants to hurt its consumers not to mention its farmers by adding more restriction.
