Ranked teams fill boys Hanson Classic field

An impressive field of high school boys basketball teams will gather on Jan. 19 for the 37th annual Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The field includes all five ranked teams in Class B, and eight teams with zero or one losses on the season in the class. In all, 14 of the 18 participating teams have two losses or less this season, through Jan. 11 games.

The ranked showdowns begin with Class B No. 5 Aberdeen Christian meeting Viborg-Hurley at 4:30 p.m., followed by second-ranked Clark/Willow Lake taking on No. 4 Timber Lake at 6 p.m. No. 1 Bridgewater-Emery and No. 3 White River will battle at 7:30 p.m. The nightcap includes two of the top teams in Class A basketball, with top-ranked Tea Area taking on No. 3 St. Thomas More at 9 p.m.

Castlewood and Irene-Wakonda will kick off the day with a 9 a.m. contest, followed by Leola/Frederick Area battling Flandreau at 10:30 a.m. A pair of Class A upstarts with Parker and Rapid City Christian will play at noon, followed by the hosts from Hanson taking on Colome at 1:30 p.m. Sioux Valley and Aberdeen Roncalli will gather at 3 p.m. in a meeting of perennial Class A powers.

The pairings for the nine-game schedule were announced on Saturday. There will be about 10 minutes between games and all start times are approximate. General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are good for all day.

1:30 p.m.: Hanson (7-1) vs. Colome (8-0)

3 p.m.: Aberdeen Roncalli (6-2) vs. Sioux Valley (8-3)

4:30 p.m.: Aberdeen Christian (9-0) vs. Viborg-Hurley (9-1)

6 p.m.: Clark/Willow Lake (7-0) vs. Timber Lake (6-0)

7:30 p.m.: Bridgewater-Emery (8-1) vs. White River (7-0)

9 p.m.: Tea Area (8-1) vs St. Thomas More (7-0)
