Kernel tennis tops Roosevelt
SIOUX FALLS—The Mitchell High School girls tennis team picked up another win on Monday, but coach Pat Moller is still striving for consistency from the Kernels.
Mitchell defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt 7-2 in a high school dual as the Kernels continue to search for consistency.
"We are right there," Moller said. "Like I said all season long, we are capable of being anybody, but we have to play our best tennis. We have to find some consistency."
On Monday, the Kernels lost matches at Flight No. 1 singles and Flight No. 1 doubles against the Rough Riders.
In Flight No. 1 singles, Avery Larson fell to Allison Eichacker, who has been a staple in the Rough Riders' lineup the past three seasons. Eichacker won 6-1, 6-0.
"Alli just played with the experience that she had and she was just better tennis player (Monday)," Moller said. "Hopefully, Avery can learn from that and improve on that."
In Flight No. 1 doubles, Larson and Kelsey Dahme fell to Eichacker and Josie Smith 1-6, 6-1 and 15-13 in a tiebreaker.
"One doubles has to play with consistency," Moller said. "We play good enough to beat anybody at times, but lately we haven't been able to string two sets together where we are playing at that high level. That's something we have to work on and maintain focus there."
But Dahme came up big in Flight No. 2 singles, notching a comeback win over Smith 5-7, 6-4 and 10-8 in a tiebreaker.
"The player of the day was probably Kelsey Dahme in singles," Moller said. "She came back from losing a first set and was down big in the second set. She came back and won the second set, 6-4, and then preserved in the tiebreak and won 10-8 in a tiebreak against a pretty good tennis player there. It was just a gutty performance from her and she's finally starting to look like a healthy Kelsey Dahme that can move around on the court."
Up next, Mitchell (12-3) plays in the Sioux Falls Lincoln Triangular today against the Patriots and Yankton.
