Mitchell topples Sioux Falls Washington
Mitchell High School hosted Sioux Falls Washington in a tennis dual meet on Thursday at Hitchcock Park and scored another win, 7-2.
The Kernels won all but three matches in straight sets, but head coach Pat Moller felt his team was sluggish coming out of the gates.
"We didn't practice very well (Wednesday), and we came out a little flat (Thursday) and some of those matches got a little closer," Moller said. "Even though we won, we just weren't hitting the balls as well as we could."
Kelsey Dahme scored a three-set win over Taylor Olson in No. 2 singles play, while Madison Bohlen, Kiersten Bathke, Atlanta Stahle and Olivia Huber each won their matches in straight sets.
Bohlen and Bathke also won their No. 2 doubles match against Rylie Nesheim and Lily Thorn, 6-1, 6-0, while Stahle and Amber Moller won a 6-1, 6-1 affair in No. 3 doubles.
Avery Larson and Dahme had a marathon match against Olson and Katelyn Nesheim at No. 1 doubles. After dropping the first set 7-5, the Mitchell tandem blanked Nesheim and Olson 6-0 in the second set, before the Washington duo nipped Larson and Dahme 15-13 in the tiebreak.
"When you're playing No. 1 doubles, you've got to expect that they're going to have two good tennis players on the other side," Moller said. "They just weren't ready to get going and it cost us a set at first. Then they turned it on in the second set and then we go to a match tiebreak and those tiebreaks are a coin flip."
Larson had been battling a minor toe injury heading into the meet, but aggravated it in the doubles match and she sat out her No. 1 singles match.
Mitchell (11-3) travels to Sioux Falls Roosevelt Monday at Kuehn Park.
