Fargo man assists in dramatic water rescue of woman whose car plunged into a Minnesota lake
ALEXANDRIA, MINN.—A Fargo man helped to rescue an elderly Minnesota woman whose drove off a bridge under construction on Interstate 94 and plunged into Lake Latoka near here.
The accident happened Saturday afternoon, June 16. Beverly Edith Toso, 76, of Hoffman, Minn., was driving eastbound in a westbound lane of I-94 when she drove off a bridge that was being replaced.
Ben Jarvi, a Douglas County deputy sheriff who happened to be close to the scene, arrived and found Toso's car mostly submerged in water. Jarvi tied a rope around his waist and entered the water, where he found Toso in her car with about four inches of air between the water and roof of her vehicle, according to a report by Douglas County Sheriff Troy Wolbersen.
Jarvi was able to open a door and pull Toso from the submerged vehicle. Kenneth Fletcher of Fargo, who reported the accident, pulled Jarvi and Toso to shore. Toso was taken by ambulance to Alomere Hospital in Alexandria.
The accident remains under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol.
