Life couldn't have been better for Elyn and Guy Simmons. They were young, successful and ready to start a family. But then the strange symptoms started. And Elyn began to change. In this special, medical mystery episode of NewdMD's "Health Fusion," Viv Williams shares the the story of how a hard-to-diagnose disease hijacked Elyn's health. Then she met a team of Mayo Clinic experts who followed the clues and sleuthed out a solution.
ROCHESTER — Maybe it was all just part of getting older. That's what Elyn Simmons thought when the symptoms started.
They were mild at first, so she wasn't too concerned. Afterall, she was 28 years old and lived a very healthy life full of exercise, healthy food and strong personal relationships. Elyn and her husband were successful, happy and couldn't wait to start having kids. But they couldn't get pregnant.
Then more symptoms appeared and intensified. After a misdiagnosis and treatment that didn't help, Elyn's appearance and personality began to change.
Elyn's story is something of a double mystery. The first part features the Elyn, the series of symptoms that happened over years and the medical team at Mayo Clinic whose sleuthing abilities rival those of Sherlock Holmes. The second part explores why, after treatment, someone may look normal, but feel worse before feeling better.
