SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — With four newly reported COVID-19 fatalities, South Dakota has reached 2,100 deaths due to the pandemic, the state Department of Health announced on Friday, Sept. 17.

One in 422 South Dakotans has died due to COVID-19 (based on the 2020 census population count of 886,667), higher than the national average of about one out of every 500 Americans. South Dakota has the 10th highest COVID-19 death rate per capita, behind Alabama and Arkansas, according to tracking by The New York Times.

Deaths due to COVID-19 have mounted in South Dakota in recent weeks, following a rising surge of the virus that began in early to mid August. There have been 31 COVID-19 fatalities reported thus far in September, compared to 17 reported in August and eight in July.

Fatality reports can be significantly delayed, making them a lagging indicator of the surge's severity. State law allows for death certificates to be filed up to 14 days after the date of death.

Following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Friday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.
