MADISON (AP) - Court documents show that a woman slain in Madison was the fiancée of the suspect.
Authorities have not yet identified the 46-year-old woman they say was shot and killed Wednesday night.
Michael Schmitz, of Madison, is charged with second-degree murder and is being held on $1 million bond.
The Argus Leader reports that an arrest affidavit says Schmitz told dispatchers he acted in self-defense when his fiancée tried to stab him with a knife.
The arrest affidavit says the woman had three gunshot wounds in her chest and two in her back.
