WINNER -- A 19-year-old Winner man appeared in federal court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Taylor White Buffalo could face a maximum of life in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of the murder charge. He was indicted May 8 by a federal grand jury.
The charges stem from an incident on April 13 in which White Buffalo allegedly assaulted and murdered Ernest White Buffalo Chief by "striking and beating" him at a Winner tribal housing facility, according to federal court documents.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher. White Buffalo was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
