RAPID CITY (AP) -- Firefighters and residents kept a wildfire from burning homes in a subdivision south of Rapid City.

Battalion Chief Tim Daly says winds gusting in excess of 35 mph pushed the flames toward some homes in the Red Rock Meadows subdivision Thursday evening. Eleven fire engines responded to the scene, and homeowners with garden hoses helped out.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
