With high water, officials deem Lake Mitchell a no wake zone
Because of high water conditions, Lake Mitchell has been deemed a “no wake zone” by city of Mitchell and South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks leaders.
The designation means that boaters will have to abide by a maximum speed of 5 mph.
Mitchell Mayor Bob Everson contacted GF&P officials requesting the declaration because of high water levels on the lake. In accordance to GF&P rules, the waters of Lake Mitchell become a no wake zone during any time at which the water level in Lake Mitchell reaches the height of 12 inches or more over the level of the top of the Lake Mitchell spillway. City officials made the determination on the lake’s water level on Thursday.
When the water level drops to 6 inches above the top of the spillway, the no wake zone can be lifted, and GF&P said that the designation will come off at that time.
