BURKE -- The South Dakota Supreme Court on Thursday authorized the Gregory County Courthouse to reopen for all judicial operations.

A judicial emergency was declared after the courthouse in Burke suffered tornado damage on Aug. 6 and the Supreme Court determined it was not operational. Gregory County judicial operations were conducted temporarily in the Tripp County Courthouse, in Winner.

Chief Justice David Gilbertson inspected the courthouse, touring court facilities with Sixth Circuit Presiding Judge Bobbi Rank and determined that it had been repaired and cleaned well enough for court proceedings to begin again. IT systems were also found to be working.

Gilbertson also met with members of the Gregory County Commission and other county officials. After touring the courthouse, he said all that's left to be repaired are some broken windows, which are currently covered by plywood.
