SIOUX FALLS -- A Wagner man was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in federal prison for having sexual contact with a 12-year-old girl in 2015.

Michael Weddell Jr. was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service immediately after sentencing.

Weddell was indicted on three counts of aggravated sexual abuse on June 6, 2018. The charges were filed in connection with incidents alleged to have taken place between June 1 and July 10, 2015.

In March, Weddell pleaded guilty to one count of abusive sexual contact by force, and the other three charges were dismissed. According to a factual basis statement filed with the court in support of Weddell's charge, in June or July of 2015, Weddell, who was 25 at the time, used force and sexually touched a 12-year-old girl while on tribal land in Charles Mix County.

Following his prison term, Weddell will spend five years on supervised release. He was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.
