HOWARD -- Fire destroyed the Howard Cold Storage and Lockers early this morning in Howard.

Howard Fire Chief John Mengenhausen said the owner of the business arrived at 4 a.m. and found the building full of dark, black smoke. He reported the fire, and when firefighters arrived there were flames shooting from inside the building. The heavy smoke prevented firefighters from getting inside, Mengenhausen said.

Nobody was in the building when the fire broke out and nobody was injured. The cause is unknown but does not look suspicious, according to Mengenhausen. He said firefighters will likely remain on scene throughout the day dousing hot spots and preventing them from spreading.
