Tuesday blaze leaves barn total loss, taking cow and calf with it

FARMER--A Tuesday afternoon barn fire three miles north of Farmer in Hanson County killed a cow and calf and led to the structure being deemed a total loss.

FARMER-A Tuesday afternoon barn fire three miles north of Farmer in Hanson County killed a cow and calf and led to the structure being deemed a total loss.

At approximately 1:41 p.m. Tuesday, the Hanson County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the scene of the barn fire, which is owned by Jeff and Marilyn Schaefers at 426 Ave., according to Hanson County Sheriff Brandon Wingert.

In addition to the sheriff's office, the Spencer Volunteer Fire Department, Alexandria Fire District and Central Electric Cooperative were the first responders at the scene and battled the blaze for nearly two hours before the structure was deemed a total loss.

Wingert said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is being investigated by the Alexandria Fire District.
