PIERRE -- The state Department of Public Safety plans to revive the fire marshal's advisory board to strengthen relationships with fire departments and firefighters across South Dakota.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard recently appointed five new members to the board, which had turned dormant in recent years for lack of use.

The Legislature established the board in 1991 to represent firefighters, the fire equipment industry and fire insurance underwriters.

The board's purpose is to advise, aid and assist the state fire marshal as directed by the state secretary of public safety, who is also a member of the board and is responsible for calling its meetings.

The governor named to the board Richard Broderick Jr., of Rapid City, Jerry Diamond, of Oacoma, Richard Gustad Jr., of Platte, Michael Harstad, of Crooks, and James Strain, of Rapid City.
