SIOUX FALLS -- Severe weather in the Sioux Falls area cut the 83rd Howard Wood Dakota Relays short here Saturday afternoon at Howard Wood Field.
The meet was called off around 6:50 p.m. when tornado reports around the area began to surface. The meet had a late start time and was suspended around 1 p.m. due to a thunderstorm warning. It was the fourth time in 20 years that the meet was cut short because of inclement weather.
The girls' special 800-meter run, which was scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, did not get run because of the weather.
Several Mitchell-area boys' relay teams did have a successful day despite the weather, however.
Colome's foursome of Derek Beck, Mitch Swartz, Ben Kartak and Newley Kartak won the Class B 800-meter relay with a time of 1:36.03. Scotland was second with a 1:36.04, Canistota was third with a 1:37.72 and Kimball took fourth with a 1:38.20.

In the Class B boys' 1,600-meter sprint medley, Avon's foursome of Chris Broz, Clarence Vanderlei, Earv Archambeau and James Tjeerdsma won with a 3:46.07. Kimball took third (3:48.76) and Stickney was fifth (3:49.10).
Also on the boys' side, Howard took fourth in the Class A 800-meter relay with a 1:36.78. Dell Rapids won with a 1:35.63. In the Class B 400-meter relay, Colome took second with a time of 46-flat. Ipswich won with a 45.72, Scotland was third (46.64), Canistota fourth (46.81), Ethan fifth (46.83) and Freeman seventh (47.47).
Individually, Chamberlain's Brandon Priebe took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 40.94 and Mitchell's Chase Olson took seventh with a 41.53. Lennox's Mark Ellefson won with a 39.44.
Parkston's Riley Reiff took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 49-6. Hopkins' (Minn.) Todd DeJong won with a 56-2.
While no area relay teams came away victorious on the girls' side, Kimball did earn a second-place finish in the Class B 1,600-meter sprint medley with a time of 4:26.72. Gayville-Volin won with a 4:18.84, Avon was third (4:27.48), Stickney was fourth (4:28.10) and Scotland was eighth (4:31.72).
In the Class B 400-meter relay, Stickney took fourth (54.62), Scotland sixth (54.70) and Freeman seventh (54.98). Colman-Egan won with a 52.86. In the Class B 800-meter relay, Scotland took fourth with a 1:52.17. C-E won with a 1:48.53.
In Class A, Winner took third in the 400-meter relay (52.54) and 800-meter relay (1:50.61) and Parkston was eighth in the 1,600-meter sprint medley (4:33.17).
Individually, McCook Central's Kristin Rotert took seventh in the discus with a toss of 118-4. Rapid City Stevens' Brooke Garner won with a 137-11. In the 300-meter hurdles, Lyman's Ashley Kemnitz took eighth with a 50.53. Stevens' Emily DeVries won with a 46.67. In the triple jump, McCook's Lora Shearer took seventh with a 34-3. Hopkins' Hanna Muegge won with a 36-10.
