VALLEY SPRINGS -- Mitchell split a doubleheader against Valley Springs in American Legion baseball action here Wednesday night.
In the first game, Post 18 (17-10) won 9-4. Jason Schmidt picked up the win on the mound for Mitchell in six innings of work. He struck out five and gave up four hits. Trever Vermeulen pitched the seventh inning and struck out two.
At the plate, Nick Wenande had two hits with a double and Brett Young and Josh Wenande each had two hits. Post 18 had 10 hits in the game. Mitchell scored three runs in the second inning to open up the game.
In Game 2, Valley Springs won 12-5. Ian Blumer took the loss in 1 1/3 innings on the mound. He was relieved by Tanner Grove, who threw 2 2/3 innings, and Mike Larson, who threw the fifth and sixth innings.
At the plate for Post 18, Austin Dorzak singled and homered. Mitchell had seven hits in all.

Up next, Post 18 is host to Parkston for a single game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cadwell Park. Then, Mitchell is host to the Dr. Robert McWhirter baseball tournament beginning on Saturday. Post 18 takes on Dell Rapids at 4 p.m. and then Worthington, Minn., at 7 at Cadwell.
