Sports: Post 18 finishes 2-3 at Marshall Tournament

RAPID CITY -- Post 18 finished 2-3 overall at the Rapid City Post 22 Marshall Tournament, winning their lone game Saturday and dropping both contests Sunday.

On Saturday, Post 18 beat Spearfish 3-1.

Brett Young picked up the win on the mound for Post 18, which had five hits, led by Trever Vermeulen with a single and triple.

Against the Rapid City Post 22 split squad in their first game Sunday, Post 18 had nine hits but lost 11-7.

Jason Schmidt led Post 18 at the plate with a homer and a single and Nick Wenande added three hits.

Ian Blumer took the loss on the mound.

Against Rapid City Post 22 in the other game on Sunday, Kirby Oldenkamp took the loss on the mound.

Post 18 (24-21) had four hits total with two coming from Vermeulen.

"The tournament served its purpose of getting necessary reps and preparation for the postseason," said Post 18 coach Kent VanoverSchelde. "Our approach to the postseason is it's a new season and a new focus for us."

Post 18 opens postseason play Thursday, traveling to Sioux Falls to take on Sioux Falls West at noon.
