SPEARFISH (AP) -- Spearfish is looking to add 134 acres of land to its city limits.

According to media reports, city leaders have approved a resolution of intent to annex the area of East Evans Lane, known as Lower Valley.

It's comprised of a mixture of commercial and residential property owned by about 70 people.

Road and future improvement project costs will be split 50-50 between Lawrence County and Spearfish after the annexation occurs. Officials say that will help offset city service expenses for police and fire.

If the annexation is passed by the city council, it would not go into effect until January 2013.
