MITCHELL — Interstate 90 from Sioux Falls to Vivian has now been closed, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

Officials closed I-90 from Sioux Falls to Mitchell on Tuesday evening, but blizzard conditions and drifting has caused additional miles of the interstate to be closed Wednesday.

There are also no travel advisories in place on multiple secondary highways throughout South Dakota. Just because the interstate is closed does not mean motorists should use secondary highways, officials say.

"Significantly reduced visibilities and blizzard-like conditions, along with extreme wind chills, will make travel very dangerous this evening and into Thursday," a press release from the DOT says.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "Mitchell Republic." Often, the "Mitchell Republic" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
