A late-season winter storm could drop up to an inch of snow in the Mitchell area on Monday, in what officials call a "relatively unusual" storm.
Rain will begin falling in the area Sunday afternoon before temperatures dip to near-freezing overnight, according to Mike Gillispie, hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
The rain is expected to switch to snow early Monday morning and continue until mid-morning, likely accumulating to approximately one inch before stopping. But, Gillispie said, the snow is not expected to accumulate on roadways, and travel should be unaffected, aside from potential visibility issues while the snow is falling.
"It's getting toward later times that we've seen measurable snow. Generally once you get to first of May it's tough to get that accumulation," Gillispie said. "The latest we've seen measurable snow is May 13, and that was in 2013."
But the cold isn't expected to last long.
