SIOUX FALLS (AP) - A student at a Sioux Falls middle school is facing criminal charges after school employees found a BB gun in his backpack.

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports that the incident happened Thursday at McGovern Middle School. Sioux Falls police say the 12-year-old boy was charged with having a weapon on school property and turned over to his parents.

The backpack was found on the football field. School employees found the gun inside when they opened it to try and find out the owner of the backpack.

Police say no one was threatened with the gun.
