A Sioux Falls man was arrested on Sunday in Mitchell when law enforcement officers reportedly found more than 13 pounds of marijuana, several ounces of THC wax and various drug paraphernalia in his car.

According to court documents, an officer was sitting in an emergency crossover on Interstate 90 near at 8:43 p.m. when a white 2004 Chevrolet Impala drove by, making noise from an exhaust leak.

The officer stopped the car, driven by 30-year-old Christopher Friedel, near mile marker 332 and reportedly smelled marijuana when he approached.

Friedel was given a warning for the improper exhaust. When told that the vehicle would be searched, Friedel admitted to a bag of marijuana and a pipe in the center console.

In the console, officers reportedly found a 0.65-ounce bag of marijuana, a glass pipe with burnt marijuana residue on it. A paper bag containing two approximately 1.2-ounce bags of marijuana was found in the back seat, and Friedel was handcuffed and arrested for possession of marijuana.

In the trunk of the car, a storage tub containing 12 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana weighing a total of 13.17 pounds was then allegedly found, as was a backpack containing three containers of THC wax, a bong with marijuana residue in it and a butane lighter. Officers also reportedly found two additional vacuum-sealed bags containing marijuana residue, two packages of rolling papers and a cartridge containing trace amounts of THC concentrate.

Friedel, who was taken to the Davison County Jail, was charged with possession of more than 10 pounds of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute one pound or more of marijuana, both of which are Class 3 felonies. He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance in schedules I or II, a Class 5 felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class 2 misdemeanor.

Friedel was released Tuesday on a $3,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 18.
