SIOUX FALLS (AP) - For the second year in a row, building has been at a record pace in South Dakota's largest city.

Sioux Falls officials say 14,839 building permits have been issued so far in 2014, and the construction valuation for those permits has reached more than $593 million. The city also posted record numbers in 2013 with 7,953 permits issued and a valuation of $588.2 million.

Officials say new apartment complexes, changes to a hospital and upgrades to the Sioux Falls Regional Airport contributed to this year's record breaking construction valuation.

Officials add that the issuance of thousands of reshingling permits resulting from a hail storm in June has also been a factor in this year's valuation record. The reshingling construction has been valuated at $73 million.
