SD storm victims have one week to apply for federal disaster assistance

FSA South Dakota SD brief

South Dakotans hit by the severe winter storm and those who endured flooding have one week to apply for federal disaster assistance.

The deadline for registering with the Federal Emergency Management Agency is Tuesday.

Local counties designated for individual assistance include Bon Homme, Charles Mix and Hutchinson.

Tuesday is also the deadline for businesses, nonprofits and homeowners and renters with property damage to apply for a low-interest disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The deadline for businesses to apply for economic injury is March 9, 2020.

In Charles Mix County, FEMA’s new mobile disaster recovery center opened earlier this week in Lake Andes. It’s tentative date to stay open is Saturday, Aug. 10. Anyone who had damage is encouraged to come to the center to discuss options.

Finally, a South Dakota Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters has created a Cleanup Assistance Hotline to help clean or remove debris to do the storms and flooding.

The phone number is 605-519-5413. It will be in operation until Aug. 9. Callers should leave their phone number for a call back by volunteers.
