ALEXANDRIA -- After being closed for 15 months due to flooding, State Highway 262 in Hanson County is now reopened.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the highway between Alexandria and Emery has reopened. It is located 3 miles southeast of Alexandria and 5 miles northwest of Emery.
The road was closed after flooding followed heavy rains in September 2019.
Construction included a surface grade raise of about 5 feet in some locations, and a short-term surface was scheduled to be finished and open to traffic by Nov. 27. Other work included grading, rebuilding the road’s base, rip-rap rock and the installation of high-tension cable guardrails.
Crews will come back in 2021 and finish the final, permanent road surface by July 16, 2021, according to South Dakota Department of Transportation documents.

The project had an estimated cost of $1.87 million and got approval from the South Dakota Transportation Commission on Aug. 27. Midland Contracting, of Huron, was the lowest bidder of five potential contractors at a cost of $1,971,928.
