RAPID CITY — South Dakota State Rep. Scyller Borglum says she will make an announcement Monday regarding the 2020 U.S. Senate race.
Borglum, a Republican from Rapid City, sent out a press release Thursday indicating that she has “made a thoroughly considered decision regarding the upcoming U.S. Senate race.”
Borglum has planned three announcement events on Monday, July 1, including a 1 p.m. event at the Dignity Native American statue at the Interstate 90 rest area in Chamberlain. A morning event is scheduled for Rapid City, and an afternoon event is scheduled in Sioux Falls, as well.
If Borglum was to enter the race, she would likely be challenging U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds in a Republican primary. Rounds, the former governor of South Dakota, is seeking a second, six-year term in Washington. He won by more than 20 percentage points in the 2014 U.S. Senate election over Democratic Party candidate Rick Weiland, and independent candidate Larry Pressler.
“My vision was made clear while meeting with my constituents of District 32 and other South Dakotans across the state,” Borglum said in the release. “I will successfully bring forth this vision to create smaller government, rebuild immigration policy, and improve healthcare access and affordability. Unlike many politicians, I have achievable, common-sense conservative solutions for these real problems affecting all South Dakotans.”

Borglum, 42, was appointed to the House seat previously held by Sean McPherson in August 2018, and was then elected to a two-year term in November. She works as an engineer, and holds a doctorate in the field from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
